Welcome to ASL

It is with gratitude that we are able to offer free American Sign Language classes to the members of Church of the Advent, St. Thomas Deaf Church, and members of the community.

The classes will teach you some basic signs in ASL.  In ASL I you will learn the alphabet, numbers 1-100, and some basic words.

It is our hope to offer a ASL 2 class in the future.

These classes are intended for adults at this time, but in the future we hope to offer them to older children.

Your instructor will be Ron Selinger, who is a member of St. Thomas Deaf Church and is an instructor at University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) and Maryville University.

Ron is a graduate of Lindenwood University in theater and has attended Gallaudet University, a university in Washington, DC for the advanced education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

ABOUT US

Since 1957, the Church of the Advent Episcopal Church has been a thriving force in the City of Crestwood.  Feeding the hungry, providing meaningful worship and growing a faith-filled community have been our mission.  Come see us in action!

In the fall of 2021, St. Thomas Deaf Church joined when their Vicar, Rev. Emily Hillquist Davis, became the Rector of Advent.  Always thinking of others, the members of Advent invited the members of St. Thomas to follow Rev. Emily and we became "Partners in Christ".

St. Thomas Deaf Church was started in 1876, founded by Austin Ward Mann, who was a Deaf priest.  St. Thomas is one of only three Deaf Episcopal Churches left in The Episcopal Church, but the Episcopal Conference of the Deaf (ECD), a national organization, is hoping to change that statistic.  You can learn more about the St. Thomas and the ECD by looking at our HISTORY page.
